Dearest 101,For your assignment, you are supposed to read 2 passages. The passages and instructions:
Practice Reading the passages and record it when you are ready. Begin with: My name is ____ from Sec ___
Passage one:
"My father had to go to England last year on a lengthy business trip and he took my mother and me with him," said Devi."What was the highlight of your trip?" asked Menon."It was something unexpected, something i'd known nothing about before i went. Yes, i enjoyed visiting the sights of London, but it was Guy Fawkes Day that i remember most fondly.""Whats that?""Mr. Smith, my father's business associate, explained to us that every year on 5th November, the English celebrate the day they found a terrorist who was planning to blow up the Houses of Parliament with everyone inside.""I don't remember that on the news.""No, you wouldn't have - it happened four hundred years ago, in 1605. Can you believe he had already put barrels of gunpowder in the cellars underneath the building? Mr. Smith took us to his daughter's primary school, where they held a model of this terrorist, Guy Fawkes. Then they lit the bonfire, and all the children cheered and were very excited.""Didn't it feel rather hot?" asked Menon."Oh, no. It was a chilly night and we all wore coats and gloves. The children were given warm fruit juice while the adults had what they called "punch" which had some alcohol in it, if i'n not mistaken. The food was delicious as they had a barbacue. We has sausages - and they tasted good! i think i polished off three large ones."
Passage 2:
In this passage, a group of women talk about their families' achievements.
//"Did you hear about my nephew Tony's results?" said Mrs Chan, as she handed round coffee to the women sitting on the sofa. "He qualified with a first class degree and got the highest marks of anyone in his year."
//"That reminds me," said Mrs. Tiny, "our Mary is now a Doctor of Law at Kingston University. She wrote to tell me that her husband has just been promoted to Chairman of Canning's Bank too. They..."
//"Biscuits anyone?" interrupted Mrs. Chan. "I got the recipe from that free magazine at the supermarket."
//"Susan's youngest has won a music scholarship," chipped in Mrs Low, who had been waiting for a lull in the conversation to tell her news. "Susan say she doesn't know where she is going to find time to listen to him practice now that Peter is tennis champion. There isn't the room in the house for all the cups Peter's won."
//The ladies sat for a moment contemplating the achievements of their children and grandchildren.
//"How is your scientific work, Molly?" said Mrs. Chan, so suddenly remembering Molly, her cousin, who had been listening carefully but had contributed nothing so far.
//Molly looked mischeviously at their eager faces.
//"I am working on a project called Baby Brains" said Molly, who was doing nothing of the sort. "I'm developing techniques to bosst a baby's brain power while it's still in the womb to encourage Alert Baby Syndrome."
